Psychometric Tests

Psychometric tests have been used since the early part of the 20th century. These days psychometric testing is a regular part of the recruitment or selection process. These tests measure attributes like intelligence, aptitude and personality.

As a recruitment and selection tool, such tests are used at the early stages of selection to screen out candidates. Psychometric tests (like Myers Briggs Type Indicator - MBTI) are also used by organizations/companies for evaluation of their staff.

Competitive Exams

ISSB/CSS

Candidates for selection in Pakistan armed forces (ISSB) and civil services need to have an introduction and orientation of the psych tests. For ISSB candidates some preparatory booklets have been prepared. A testing program for these candidates is arranged by PTS. Write email for more info.

Outline of the Test

A general outline of the tests being used for this purpose is given in the following paragraphs.

Personal History Form: This form contains information about a candidate’s family, education, extra curricular activities, previous work experience etc.

Intelligence Tests: These tests attempt to measure your intelligence—that is, your basic ability to understand the world around you, assimilate its functioning, and apply this knowledge to enhance the quality of your life. A comprehensive Intelligence test contains verbal and non-verbal items (questions).
Personality Tests: These tests include some standardized inventories and projective tests like Sentence Completion, Word Association, Thematic Apperception Test, etc.
Group Discussion: Candidates are exposed to a session of group discussion. The aim is to observe and assess their leadership abilities like dynamism, influencing ability, verbal expression, initiative, etc.
Interview: In some organizations a brief interview is held to screen candidates for obvious neurotic behavior like nervous tics, excessive anxiety, compulsive behavior etc. The motivation of a candidate to serve a particular organization is also explored through this interview.

Duration

The whole testing program lasts for about 4 – 5 hours.
